Happiness is the ultimate goal of continually developing as a person. It is something that we must cultivate within ourselves as a state of mental and emotional well being. As the Dalai Lama has said, “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” What will lead to a state of happiness and harmony within our own lives is a very individual journey. Determining with these actions should be is up to each individual, but there is a lot of research that can help point us in the right direction. Read on to find out what these surprising secrets to true happiness are and how you have implement them in your daily life.

1. Generosity

Being generous means taking an action toward another person that is attuned and sensitive to that person’s needs and wants. True generosity means giving of ourselves, and our time in ways that go beyond just benefitting ourselves. Things that we do that benefit another person, that benefit the community, and the benefit society as a whole are all examples of what generosity is. Generosity doesn’t just benefit the recipient of our offerings. It’s incredibly valuable to our own mental and physical health. It naturally reduces stress and combats depression, while enhancing our sense of purpose. It can even lengthen our lifespan.

2. Being Present

Practicing being present in the moment is a very good way to lead yourself on the path to cultivating happiness within your life. It is easy to be distracted all of the time in our modern society because we are constantly surrounded by technology all of the time. But, it is very important to stay focused on the present moment and not be distracted by what is going on around you. Focusing on the past will also distracted you, as will focusing on the future. Focusing on the future will only lead to anxiety and focusing on the past will lead to regret, shame, and depression. Practicing mindfulness meditation every day for 20 minutes per day will definitely help you focus on staying present.

3. Gratitude

Being grateful for what you do have in your life will help to do have more fulfillment and happiness in your life. Even if you are not where you want to be in your life, be grateful for where you are now, and also be grateful for where you are going. Envision where you truly want to be in your life in the future, and then practice being grateful for that being your reality. It will go a long way in helping you get there. There is always things to be grateful for in our lives, even simple things like having a roof over your head and not going hungry. You have to practice being grateful until it becomes second nature to you. Practicing gratitude is an important part of the process.

4. Resilience

Being resilient means that you persevere through difficult and challenging times and situations in your life and you come out of it stronger. Resilience is about meeting challenges and facing your fears instead of ignoring your problems or feeling put down. Developing a mechanism within your own consciousness that allows you to let things roll off of you and have a tougher outer shell with help you succeed in life and it also help you to be in a better mood and perform betting at work and in society.

5. Self Esteem

Having high self esteem is the last crucial secret to living a happy, healthy, and successful life. Low self-esteem is associated with negative thoughts about yourself and which then in turn perpetuates unhappiness. A healthy and high sense of self-esteem means being more accepting of yourself and your life which will then lead to far fewer negative thoughts and much more positive thoughts. This will really make a positive impact on your overall sense of well being, as well as your sense of self and direction in life. Happiness is complex and there are many factors that can influence it. Every single effort that you make counts and building self-esteem can make a huge difference.
